Dizziness types & treatments

Some major types and causes of dizziness and how we treat them at our Chatswood chiropractic clinic.

Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)

BPPV is condition that affects the inner ear. It may be a result of trauma to the head, increasing age or have no cause at all. Patients with BPPV experience short bursts of vertigo and dizziness when moving their head. It is due to small calcified structures moving around in the inner ear. It is a balance disorder and it is important to rule out other conditions such as labyrinthitis and Meniere’s disease. In some instances imaging of the head may be required.

Treatment at the clinic involves teaching sufferers simple movements such the Dix-Hall-Pike and Epley’s manoeuvre. Further, we can reduce the irritation that occurs in the head and neck due to ongoing vertigo.

Cervicogenic Dizziness

The neck plays an important role in the stability and balance of the body. In some instances when the neck is irritated, the bodies understanding of where it is in space may become dysfunctional. For this reason some persistent neck pain may result in the experience of dizziness or vertigo, which is called Cervicogenic Dizziness.

FAQs About Chiropractic Treatment for Dizziness & Vertigo

Can chiropractic care help with dizziness and vertigo?

Chiropractic treatment focuses on spinal alignment and joint mobility to reduce pain and inflammation. By correcting spinal irritation and improving movement patterns, many patients experience significant pain reduction and improved function over time.

What causes dizziness?

Cervicogenic dizziness stems from neck joint dysfunction, muscle tension, or irritated cervical vertebrae. This type of dizziness often accompanies neck pain, headaches, and occurs after neck injuries or prolonged poor posture.

How quickly can I expect improvement in my dizziness?

Many patients notice some improvement within 2-4 treatment sessions. However, chronic dizziness may require 6-8 weeks of consistent treatment to achieve significant, lasting results. Response time depends on the underlying cause and severity of symptoms.

Should I see a medical doctor before chiropractic treatment for dizziness?

Our chiropractors will work with your doctor to rule out serious conditions like inner ear disorders, cardiovascular issues, or neurological problems. Once medical causes are excluded, chiropractic care can be an excellent treatment option for dizziness.

What techniques do chiropractors use to treat dizziness?

Chiropractors use gentle spinal adjustments, soft tissue therapy, vestibular rehabilitation exercises, and posture correction techniques. Treatment focuses on restoring proper neck alignment, reducing muscle tension, and improving the relationship between your neck and balance systems.
